Where Was Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle Filmed?

The 2017 jungle adventure shot its jungle scenes on Oahu, Hawaii, and its real-world scenes around Atlanta, Georgia.

The Short Answer

Most of the jungle was filmed on Oahu, Hawaii, above all at Kualoa Ranch and Waimea Valley, with extra waterfall footage at Kawainui Falls near Hilo on the Big Island. The real-world scenes, including the high school exteriors and Alex Vreeke's house, were shot in and around Atlanta, Georgia, which also hosted the studio work.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle sends its teenage heroes into a video game jungle, but the production itself split its time between two very different places. Principal photography ran from September to December 2016, with the jungle built in Hawaii and the ordinary world recreated in Georgia.

Kualoa Ranch served as the main production base on Oahu. The ranch has appeared in Jurassic Park, Lost, and many other productions, and today it runs tours that pass directly through areas used in the film. Dwayne Johnson, a Hawaii native, noted the positive impact filming had on local businesses.

Kualoa Ranch (Ka’a’awa Valley), Kaneohe
Location 01

Kualoa Ranch (Ka’a’awa Valley)

Oahu, Kaneohe Ticketed

Filmed here: Jaguar Temple, motorcycle chase, characters discovering avatar powers and weaknesses

Kualoa Ranch stands in for much of the Jumanji jungle, including the Jaguar Temple approach, the motorcycle chase, and the moments where the characters discover their avatar powers and weaknesses. It is a working ranch and popular tourist attraction on the windward side of Oahu, and many of the film locations are accessible through its ticketed tours. The ranch actively highlights its film history, so visitors can recognize the valley backdrops from the movie.

Waimea Falls / Waimea Valley, Haleiwa
Location 02

Waimea Falls / Waimea Valley

Oahu, Haleiwa Ticketed

Filmed here: Hippopotamus scene, water sequences, cliff edge set in parking lot

The hippopotamus scene and several water sequences were filmed at Waimea Falls in Waimea Valley, near Haleiwa on Oahu's north shore. A cliff edge set was also built in the parking lot area, though some sets were temporary and no longer exist. Today the valley is a park with ticketed access, botanical gardens, and a swimming hole at the base of the waterfall itself, making it one of the easier film sites to enjoy on its own merits.

1646 Friar Tuck Rd NE, Atlanta
Location 03

1646 Friar Tuck Rd NE

Georgia, Atlanta Private property

Filmed here: Exterior of Alex Vreeke's house

This Atlanta house served as the exterior of Alex Vreeke's home, the lonely house where the missing player's story begins and ends. It is a private residence, so it is visible from the street but not open to the public. Anyone making the trip should view it from the sidewalk and avoid disturbing the residents, since this remains an ordinary family home in a residential Atlanta neighborhood.

Westlake High School, Atlanta
Location 04

Westlake High School

Georgia, Atlanta Outside only

Filmed here: Exterior of Brantford High School

Westlake High School in Atlanta provided the exterior of Brantford High School, where the four students serve detention before being pulled into the game. It is a public school, so access is limited to exterior views during non-school hours. The building is a quick stop for film fans already exploring Atlanta's southwest side, and there is little else to do beyond recognizing the facade from the opening scenes.

Heʻeia State Park / Heeia Kea Jungle, Kaneohe
Location 05

Heʻeia State Park / Heeia Kea Jungle

Oahu, Kaneohe Free to see

Filmed here: Path to the jaguar, Van Pelt's camp scenes

Heʻeia State Park near Kaneohe supplied the path to the jaguar and the scenes set at Van Pelt's camp. Unlike the ranch, this is public land with trails available, so visitors can explore without buying a tour ticket. The park sits on Oahu's windward coast with views over Kaneohe Bay, and its jungle trails match the terrain seen on screen in the film's antagonist sequences.

Kawainui Falls (near Papaikou), Hilo
Location 06

Kawainui Falls (near Papaikou)

Big Island, Hilo Free to see

Filmed here: Waterfall-jumping scene

The waterfall-jumping scene was filmed at Kawainui Falls near Papaikou on the Big Island, north of Hilo. The falls are known outside film circles as a venue for Red Bull Cliff Diving events. Access is free but the area is remote, and anyone planning a visit should check local access conditions and safety before setting out, as the terrain around the waterfall is not developed for casual tourism.

Atlanta Metro Studios area / Southern Railway building, Atlanta
Location 07

Atlanta Metro Studios area / Southern Railway building

Georgia, Atlanta Private property

Filmed here: Bazaar chase scene (built set)

The bazaar chase scene was not shot in a real market but on a built set inside an old Southern Railway building in downtown Atlanta. The production also used Atlanta Metro Studios in nearby Union City for studio work. Neither the studio nor the downtown building is open to the public, so there is nothing to visit here; this location matters mostly for understanding how much of the jungle world was constructed rather than found.

Kualoa Ranch additional areas, Kaneohe
Location 08

Kualoa Ranch additional areas

Oahu, Kaneohe Ticketed

Filmed here: Multiple jungle and valley scenes

Beyond the Ka’a’awa Valley highlights, multiple additional jungle and valley scenes across Kualoa Ranch property appear throughout the film. The ranch tours highlight this film history alongside locations from other major productions shot on the same land. For travelers deciding where to spend a day on Oahu, the ranch offers the densest concentration of Jumanji sites anywhere, all reachable through its ticketed tour options rather than independent exploration.

Where It Is Set Versus Where It Was Filmed

The story is set in the fictional town of Brantford, New England, for the high school scenes, and inside the video game world of Jumanji for the jungle adventure. Neither was real. The New England town was recreated around Atlanta, Georgia, and the jungle was filmed on Oahu and the Big Island in Hawaii.

The Studio Side

Atlanta Metro Studios in Union City, Georgia, handled the production's studio work, and the bazaar chase was built on a set inside an old Southern Railway building in downtown Atlanta. Neither site is open to visitors, but together they show how much of the film's world was constructed indoors rather than shot on location.

Tours That Visit These Locations

No dedicated Jumanji tour exists, but two Oahu tours visit Kualoa Ranch and pass the areas seen in the film, including the dance-fight area, alongside locations from many other movies shot on the property.

Is Kualoa Ranch Worth Visiting For Jumanji Fans?

Kualoa Ranch was the main production base on Oahu and appears throughout the film, from the Jaguar Temple approach to the motorcycle chase. The ranch runs tours that highlight its film history, covering this movie alongside Jurassic Park, Lost, and many others.

Where Is Alex Vreeke's House?

The exterior is a private home at 1646 Friar Tuck Rd NE in Atlanta, Georgia. It is visible from the street but not open to the public, and visitors should not disturb the residents.

What School Was Used As Brantford High?

Westlake High School in Atlanta provided the exterior. It is a functioning public school, so only exterior views are possible, and only during non-school hours.

How Long Did Filming Take?

Principal photography ran from September to December 2016, split between Oahu and the Big Island in Hawaii and the Atlanta, Georgia area.

For most travelers, Oahu is where the film comes alive: Kualoa Ranch offers the widest access to the jungle scenes through its tours, while Waimea Valley and Heʻeia State Park reward independent exploring. Atlanta adds the real-world exteriors for completists, and the Big Island waterfall suits only the most determined fans given its remoteness.
