Where Was Line Of Duty Filmed?

AC-12's home city is really Belfast, though the show pretends otherwise. Here is where every key location actually stands.

The Short Answer

Line of Duty was filmed mainly in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Season 1 was shot in and around Birmingham, England, but from season 2 onwards the production moved to Belfast, using real landmarks such as Belfast Central Library and the Invest Northern Ireland building, plus soundstages at Belfast Harbour Studios. Season 7 also filmed in Belfast, wrapping in July 2026.

Line of Duty spends a lot of energy hiding where it is actually filmed. The show is set in a vague fictional Midlands city, complete with invented postcodes and 0121 area codes, yet almost every exterior after season 1 comes from Belfast. That mismatch is part of the fun for fans visiting Northern Ireland's capital, where AC-12's world sits within walking distance of ordinary city streets.

The production switched cities after season 1, leaving Birmingham for Belfast thanks to the show's growing success and Northern Ireland's filming incentives. Interrogation scenes were shot on soundstages at Belfast Harbour Studios, while location work used offices, libraries, pubs and underpasses across the city. Most of these spots are publicly viewable today, and several sit close together in the centre.

Invest Northern Ireland Building, Belfast
Location 01

Invest Northern Ireland Building

Northern Ireland, Belfast Outside only

Filmed here: Exterior and lobby of AC-12 headquarters (Kingsgate House)

This office block doubled as Kingsgate House, AC-12's headquarters, with both its exterior and lobby appearing on screen. It remains an active workplace, so interior access is off limits, but the facade can be viewed freely from the public street. Fans recognise it instantly as the place where Hastings, Arnott and Fleming came and went between interrogations. No ticket or arrangement is needed to photograph it from outside.

Belfast Central Library, Belfast
Location 02

Belfast Central Library

Northern Ireland, Belfast Free to see

Filmed here: Police Headquarters (Pelbury House) exterior and some interiors

The library stood in for Pelbury House, the wider police headquarters, in both exterior shots and some interior scenes. Unlike most filming locations, it is fully open to the public during normal library opening hours, so visitors can walk inside and stand where scenes were shot. It is a working library in the city centre, making it one of the easiest and most accessible stops on any Line of Duty pilgrimage through Belfast.

BT Riverside Tower, Belfast
Location 03

BT Riverside Tower

Northern Ireland, Belfast Private property

Filmed here: Interiors of AC-12 offices and interrogation rooms (series 2+)

The tower housed the interiors of the AC-12 offices and interrogation rooms from series 2 onwards, and eagle-eyed viewers have spotted original BT signage left visible in shots. It is an active office building with no public access, so fans can only admire it from outside. Its role matters though: this is effectively the inside of AC-12, even if the famous interrogation scenes themselves were filmed elsewhere on soundstages.

Tates Avenue, Belfast
Location 04

Tates Avenue

Northern Ireland, Belfast Free to see

Filmed here: Shoot-out scenes and stand-offs (series 3, 5)

This ordinary residential street in south Belfast hosted shoot-out scenes and armed stand-offs in series 3 and 5. It is fully public, but it remains a lived-in neighbourhood, so visitors should be quiet and respectful of residents' privacy. There is little signage or fanfare here, just recognisable terraced surroundings for those who remember the gun battles. A quick visit is enough to take in the atmosphere and snap a photo.

Tomb Street (Royal Mail Building area), Belfast
Location 05

Tomb Street (Royal Mail Building area)

Northern Ireland, Belfast Free to see

Filmed here: Shoot-out between Steve Arnott and John Corbett (series 5)

Tomb Street, near the Royal Mail building close to Belfast city centre, was the setting for the dramatic shoot-out between Steve Arnott and John Corbett in series 5. It is a public street, freely walkable and easy to reach on foot from other central locations. Fans of that tense sequence will recognise the surrounding buildings, and its city centre position makes it a natural stop on any self-guided tour.

Birmingham Municipal Bank (Broad Street), Birmingham
Location 06

Birmingham Municipal Bank (Broad Street)

West Midlands, Birmingham Outside only

Filmed here: AC-12 headquarters exterior (series 1)

Back in season 1, before the move to Belfast, the historic Municipal Bank on Broad Street served as the AC-12 headquarters exterior. It is a striking period building that can be viewed from the street, though only from outside. Birmingham-based fans can trace the show's origins here without crossing the Irish Sea. It anchors the smaller cluster of series 1 locations scattered across the West Midlands city.

Queen's Arms pub (Newhall Street), Birmingham
Location 07

Queen's Arms pub (Newhall Street)

West Midlands, Birmingham Free to see

Filmed here: Various scenes (series 1)

This operating pub on Newhall Street appeared in various scenes during season 1, when the show was still rooted in Birmingham. Because it is a working pub, visitors can do better than look from outside: they can walk in, order a drink and sit inside a genuine filming location. It pairs naturally with the nearby Municipal Bank on Broad Street for a short Birmingham-based Line of Duty walk.

Albert Memorial Clock / Subway (Queen's Square), Belfast
Location 08

Albert Memorial Clock / Subway (Queen's Square)

Northern Ireland, Belfast Free to see

Filmed here: Secret rendezvous and underpass meetings

The underpass near the Albert Memorial Clock in Queen's Square provided the setting for secret rendezvous and shadowy underpass meetings, a recurring visual motif of the series. It is a public pedestrian area right in Belfast city centre, free to visit at any time. The leaning clock tower above makes it easy to find, and its proximity to other central locations makes it a convenient addition to a walking route.

Where It Is Set Versus Where It Was Filmed

Line of Duty is set in a deliberately vague fictional Midlands city the scripts simply call 'The City', sprinkled with East Midlands references such as 0121 area codes and invented postcodes like LB1 2CV. Filming tells a different story: season 1 was shot in Birmingham, which at least matched the setting's geography, but every subsequent season through to season 7 was filmed in and around Belfast. The result is a show that looks Midlands but is almost entirely Northern Irish.

The Studio Side

Interrogation scenes, the heart of every episode, were filmed on soundstages at Belfast Harbour Studios in the Titanic Quarter rather than in real offices. The studios are not open to visitors. Season 7 filmed in Belfast in spring and summer of 2026, wrapping in July.
